CRUX GNU/Linux – Quick Install Reference

This guide is aimed at people who have prior experience of installing Linux. It is a short summary of the install and basic setup procedure. For more detailed instructions, please consult the CRUX Handbook.

00 boot the CRUX install CD / login as root
01 patition your hard drive
cfdisk /dev/hda
02 format your partition(s)
mkreiserfs /dev/hdaX
03 create swap space
mkswap /dev/hdaY
04 mount your new install partition
mount /dev/hdaX /mnt
05 setup swap space
swapon /dev/hdY
06 install the base system packages(don't forget ports and cvsup)
setup
07 chroot into your new CRUX system
mount -t devfs devfs /mnt/dev
mount -t proc proc /mnt/proc
chroot /mnt /bin/bash
08 set the root password
passwd
09 edit the filesystemtable
vim /etc/fstab
10 setup system parameters and services
vim /etc/rc.conf
11 configure your network
vim /etc/rc.d/net
vim /etc/hosts
vim /etc/resolv.conf
12 configure and compile your kernel
cd /usr/src/linux-x.x.x
make menuconfig
make all
13 install your kernel
make modules_install
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /vmlinuz
cp System.map /System.map
14 configure and install the boot loader 15 remove the install CD, boot from harddisk and login
vim /etc/lilo.conf
lilo
16 upgrade the local ports tree
ports -u
17 install prt-get (an advanced package management tool)
cd /usr/ports/contrib/prt-get
pkgmk -d -i
18 update the whole system
prt-get sysup
19 let your imagination run wild ....
prt-get depinst .....
